Computing at St. Bernadette

From Reception through to year 6 each class has a computing lesson each week. Lessons are taught in the ICT suite where children work on their own computer. In the lessons ICT skills are taught wherever possible in a cross-curricular manner, so that they tie in with other areas of learning. Sometimes skills being taught can only be taught in a stand alone manner. Teachers can sign up for any remaining free slots for the ICT suite to use the computers to enhance learning in other areas. Each year group is using mobile technology (i-Pads and other tablets) for at least one unit of work and also across the curriculum.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment. Please see the EYFS area on the website for further details. This leads to the Science, History, Geography and Computing curriculums in KS1 & KS2.

From September classes will be following the Rising Stars Switched on Computing programme which ensures all children cover the new programme of study for the Computing Curriculum - computer science, information technology and digital literacy.

The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, children are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that children become digitally literate - able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology - at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Digital Citizenship (E-Safety) is now taught termly as part of the PSHCE curriculum however, every unit of the programme of study reinforces the importance of staying safe when using the internet. The children will be constantly reminded of this important lesson.
